Make The Most Of This Holiday Season
The best part of the holiday season is spending time with family. This time of year often provides rare opportunities to get the whole gang together, or catch up with distant relatives that you haven't seen for a while. That means it's also a perfect opportunity to collaborate with family members to start a family tree, or fill in gaps on one you've already created. In November, myfamily.com released a new tree building feature to help you get started.
Whether you're an old pro, or just a beginner, here are a few tips to help you make the most of this holiday season and start or grow your family tree:
1.
Create a Simple Plan - Before you head out for your family's holiday activities, take a few minutes to figure out what parts of your family tree could benefit from the people you're about to see. Could they provide any missing details? Do they have information on recent births, marriages or deaths that could be added? How do you plan to gather the information? Should you take copies of anything to share with them?
2.
Take Family Photos - The family photos that you take today will become the heirlooms of future generations, so don't pass up the chance this year to take a group shot or snap candids of individual family members.
3.
Gather and Share Historical Documents - Are you the proud owner of great-grandpa's birth certificate? Have you always wanted a copy of that old photo on grandma's wall? Use this holiday season as an opportunity to figure out who has what, and make arrangements with other family members to gather and share your family's historical documents.
4.
Record Family Stories - Take advantage of your time together this year to document your family's stories. You can write them down or even make an audio or video recording. If you're planning to record someone else's story, it may be helpful to prepare a list of interview questions beforehand so that you can gather as many key details as possible.
Building a family tree isn't always easy, and it usually doesn't happen overnight. But if you take advantage of the time you have with family members this holiday season, you'll come away with a ton of great information that can help add color and life to your family tree.

How Do You Use myfamily.com?
submitted by:
Tina Brown
Ashland, VA
"I clean, paint and repair houses for agents and private owners who are getting one ready for the sales or rental market. Myfamily.com gives me a forum to which I can post before and after photos and keep them organized in albums. The ‘share’ feature is great. I can give anyone access to a certain group of photos without giving them access to the entire site. The links can be forwarded from a real estate agent to an owner or prospective buyer."
